Psalm 107: Why is it Hard to Praise God for His Goodness
September 19, 2021
Do you know how to sing through meeting God in His Word?
READ: Psalm 107
Get Going:
What’s the worst journey you’ve ever been on?
What do we see when troubles come our way?
Context: The Book of Psalms begins with exhorting us to delight in the law of the Lord (Torah) (1:2), and then is followed by a warning in Ps 2, the nations of the world are coming against God. A struggle. And the first book of the psalms provided reflection on God in His rescue from us being His enemies, as well as those from the enemies of God’s people.
The second and third book encourage God’s people to come to Zion, God’s holy mountain and celebrate His goodness.
Book four is dominated by the theme of God’s reign. How He has always been King through Israel’s troubled history.
Book five is God’s people ascending the Hill to Jerusalem, coming Home. All five books are like a journey of God’s salvation history, both in the Old Testament of the Jews coming into the land, but also in the big picture of the whole bible, of God’ people hearing God’s Kingly voice, and being rescued and taken into God’s Kingdom.
Like with all journeys over the course of a lifetime there are highs and lows. What the Psalms teach us is how to sing through meeting God in His Word.
