Nehemiah 4: 1-14 | Remember The Lord Who Is Great and Mighty
Where do we find our confidence and reassurance when we have to face adversity?
Main Idea:
The enemies of God will rise up against His work, and when they do, remember the Lord who is great and mighty, and has proven himself in the salvation of his people time and again.
Why (transformational intent of the passage)?:
To find confidence in our great and mighty God to fight the good fight of faith as we follow Jesus.
The Story So Far
- Nehemiah hears of Jerusalem’s wretched state and prays
- The king of Persia grants Nehemiah to go and rebuild the wall of Jerusalem
- The people begin the work
The enemies of the work (the enemies of God) Sanballat, Tobiah, and Gesham begin to assert their opposition against the rebuilding of Jerusalem
Anger and Mockery (v.1-4)
- The anger of the enemy
- These are real men who are standing in for the true enemy, Satan
- The initial wave of opposition comes from verbal insults against the work.
Nehemiah’s response to the mockery from God’s enemies…
is to pray that the Lord would repay His enemies with their own wishes
The Threat of Attack (v.7-9)
- The success of the people to rebuild grows the anger of the enemy
- The people respond…… with prayer
The threats of the enemy take their toll…
The strength of the people begins to fail…
They can’t rebuild the wall by themselves
Now, there are even some who think it’s time to leave
Nehemiah 4:14
Remember the Lord who is great and awesome
And
Fight for your brothers, yours sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.
…”fight for the kingdom“
What’s the point for us?
We find our confidence in our great and mighty God so that today we can fight the good fight of faith and follow our King, Jesus.
Points of application
Fight for one another…. in prayer, in support, in care
Fight the good fight of faith (1 Tim 6:11)
Fight to see His kingdom grow
- What if the whole church was the missionary?
- What does it look like if we take up our stations the Lord has placed us at as we live like missionaries in our neighborhoods, communities, and workplaces
- Let the world around you see the light of Christ and the transformation and hope that it brings shine through you.
